The friendship between New Zealand historian Jock Phillips and New Zealand writer and craftsperson Chris MacLean resulted in a collaborative project for which they travelled throughout New Zealand photographing war memorials erected to commemorate World War I, World War II, the South African War (Boer War), Inter-tribal conflicts, and the New Zealand Wars.
The Library has preserved the original arrangement where possible. Digital files were delivered on separate CD and USB objects. The 35mm slide boxes were delivered in one box, each box of slides labelled with the conflict to which the war memorials related. The photographs were arranged within the ringbinders by conflict, location, and type of memorial, with the exception of two ring binders of images selected for publication.
